How this is calculated
FV = P × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
- P
- Monthly instalment
- i
- Monthly return = annual return ÷ 12 (or the effective monthly rate)
- n
- Number of monthly instalments
- × (1 + i)
- Instalments at the start of each month earn one extra month (drop it for end-of-month)
Each monthly instalment buys units that then compound until the end of the period, so early instalments grow the most. With a step-up, the instalment rises every 12 months. The calculator works month by month, so step-ups, a starting lumpsum, partial years and end-of-month instalments are all exact rather than approximated.
Assumptions & sources
- The expected return is earned steadily every month; real returns vary and the sequence matters for SIPs.
- By default instalments are invested at the start of each month and the monthly return is the annual return ÷ 12 — the convention of most Indian SIP calculators, so results match what you see elsewhere.
- Expense ratios, exit loads and taxes are not deducted beyond what the assumed return reflects.

- 2Investor education material — SEBI — Securities and Exchange Board of India

Common questions
How much difference does a step-up make?
A lot over long periods. ₹10,000 a month for 15 years at 12 % grows to about ₹50 lakh flat — with a 10 % yearly step-up it is about ₹87 lakh, because later, larger instalments still have years to compound.
How is the step-up applied?
The instalment rises by the step-up percentage every 12 instalments (months 13, 25, 37 …), and each new amount stays fixed for that year. The table shows the instalment in force each year.
Is the return guaranteed?
No. The return is your assumption; mutual fund returns are market-linked.
