Each withdrawal is part capital and part gains; only the gains part is taxed, which usually makes SWPs tax-efficient compared with interest income.

An estimate from the assumptions you entered, not a guaranteed outcome.

How this is calculated

Each month: Balance = Balance × (1 + r/12) − W; W rises by g every 12 months

r
Expected annual return (divided by 12, as fund-house SWP calculators do)
W
Monthly withdrawal
g
Yearly increase in the withdrawal

An SWP redeems units worth your chosen amount every month while the rest stays invested and keeps earning. If the withdrawal is less than what the corpus earns, the balance can even grow; if it is more, the corpus slowly runs down. Raising the withdrawal with inflation keeps your income's buying power but uses the corpus faster.

Assumptions & sources

  • Constant return credited monthly (annual rate ÷ 12); withdrawals at the end of each month.
  • Taxes, exit loads and expense changes are not deducted.
  • If the balance can't cover a withdrawal, what's left is paid and withdrawals stop.

Common questions

How much can I withdraw safely?

If the yearly withdrawal is below the expected return, the corpus should last indefinitely (in money terms). To keep pace with inflation as well, withdraw less than the return minus inflation.

How is SWP taxed in India?

Each redemption contains capital and gains. Only the gain part is taxed as capital gains — by holding period and fund type — which is often lower tax than interest from an FD.

SWP or dividend option?

An SWP gives a fixed, predictable amount on dates you choose. Dividend (IDCW) payouts vary, aren't guaranteed and are taxed fully as income.
