How this is calculated
Each month: Balance = Balance × (1 + r/12) − Withdrawal; every 12 months Withdrawal × (1 + g)
- r
- Return on the corpus
- g
- Yearly increase in the withdrawal (inflation)
The planner simulates your corpus month by month: it earns its return, then your withdrawal is taken out, and the withdrawal rises once a year. It reports when — if ever — the balance reaches zero, and solves for the largest starting withdrawal that lasts exactly until your planning age.
Assumptions & sources
- Withdrawals at the end of each month; returns credited monthly at the annual rate ÷ 12.
- Returns and inflation are constant averages — real markets vary year to year, and a bad sequence early in retirement matters most.
- Taxes on withdrawals and investment gains are not deducted.

Common questions
What withdrawal rate does this imply?
The result is also shown as a share of the corpus in the first year. With returns near inflation and a 25–30 year horizon it typically comes out around 3.5–5 %.
What if I live longer than planned?
The income is calculated to run the corpus down to zero at your planning age, so choose an age beyond your life expectancy — 90 or 95 — or keep part of the corpus in an annuity.
