How this is calculated
Target = Cost today × (1 + inflation)^t · SIP = (Target − Savings × (1 + r)^t) ÷ SIP growth factor
- t
- Years until the goal
- r
- Expected annual return
- SIP growth factor
- What ₹1 a month grows to by then (start-of-month instalments, return ÷ 12 a month, with any step-up)
Goals are priced in today's money but paid for in future money, so the planner first inflates the cost to the date you need it. Whatever your existing savings won't cover becomes the target for a monthly SIP — or for a single investment today, if you have the money now.
Assumptions & sources
- Returns and inflation are constant. Markets are volatile, so for goals less than 3–5 years away consider safer, lower-return options and recalculate.
- SIPs use the same conventions as the SIP Calculator (start-of-month, return ÷ 12); existing savings compound annually.
- Taxes on gains at redemption are not deducted.
- 1Mutual fund investor education (SIP, lumpsum, risk) — AMFI — Association of Mutual Funds in India
- 2Investor education material — SEBI — Securities and Exchange Board of India
- 3CFA Program Curriculum — Quantitative Methods: The Time Value of Money — CFA Institute

Common questions
What inflation should I use for education?
Professional course fees in India have risen roughly 8–12 % a year — well above general inflation. 10 % is a prudent planning figure; use less for government institutions.
Where should I invest for a child's education?
With 10+ years to go, equity mutual funds are common; shift gradually to debt or a Sukanya Samriddhi account (for daughters) in the last 3 years so a market fall doesn't hit just before admission.
Should I include living and hostel costs?
Yes — for many courses they are a large share of the total, especially away from home or abroad.
