How this is calculated
Find C such that Savings × (1 + r/12)^m + Σₖ C × (1 + s)^⌊k/12⌋ × (1 + r/12)^(m − k) = Target
- C
- Monthly saving in year 1
- s
- Yearly step-up
- m
- Months until retirement
The planner works backwards from your target: first it grows the savings you already have, then finds the monthly saving that makes up the rest by your retirement age. With a step-up, the first-year amount is smaller because later contributions are larger.
Assumptions & sources
- Savings grow monthly at the pre-retirement return ÷ 12, with contributions at the start of each month; any step-up applies every 12 months.
- Returns and inflation are constant averages — real markets vary year to year, and a bad sequence early in retirement matters most.
- Taxes on withdrawals and investment gains are not deducted.

Common questions
Where does the target corpus come from?
From your expected retirement expenses, inflation and how long retirement lasts. The Retirement Corpus Planner calculates it.
Is a step-up realistic?
If your income rises over time, yes. Raising your saving by 5–10 % a year makes a big difference to the starting amount needed.
