Contributions are fixed by your age on the day you join, so they never go up as you get older. Missing a debit costs ₹1 a month for every ₹100 due.

“Indicative pension wealth” assumes the return built into the Government's chart. Your actual account value depends on how the pension funds perform. The pension amount itself is guaranteed.

How this is calculated

Contribution = official chart (age at joining × pension × frequency) · Total = Contribution × payments until 60

Chart
Fixed by the Government (Annex-1). It is consistent with about 8 % a year compounded monthly, which is the return the Government guarantees
Payments
(60 − age at joining) × 12, 4 or 2 a year
Nominee corpus
₹1.7 lakh for every ₹1,000 of monthly pension (indicative)
Overdue interest
₹1 a month per ₹100 (or part) of each late contribution

Atal Pension Yojana is a voluntary pension scheme of the Government of India, launched on 1 June 2015 and run by PFRDA under the National Pension System. You pick a pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month and pay the fixed amount from the chart until you turn 60. The Government guarantees that pension for your life, then the same pension for your spouse's life, and then returns the pension wealth to your nominee. If the funds earn less than the chart assumes, the Government makes up the shortfall. If they earn more, the extra is passed on to you as a higher pension.

APY rules at a glance

From PFRDA's FAQs, the subscriber brochure, the citizen charter and the official forms. Your bank (APY service provider) applies the current rules.

Who can join
Indian citizens aged 18 up to their 40th birthday with a savings bank or post-office savings account. NRIs who meet these conditions can join through a bank that offers APY. Only one APY account per person. Minors can't join.
Income-tax payers
Not eligible from 1 October 2022 if you are or have ever been an income-tax payer. Accounts opened on or before 30 September 2022 continue. If a taxpayer's account is found later, it's closed and the pension wealth is returned without a penalty.
Documents and details
Aadhaar is required (APY is notified under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act), along with a mobile number for SMS alerts. A nominee is mandatory. If you're married, your spouse is the default nominee, and you add your spouse's details after marriage.
Contributions
Fixed for life by your age at joining, the pension you choose and the frequency (monthly, quarterly or half-yearly). They're auto-debited from your savings account until you turn 60. Keep enough balance on the debit day.
Missed or late payments
₹1 a month for every ₹100 (or part) of each late contribution. This overdue interest stays in your own pension account. The account isn't closed for non-payment, but maintenance charges are deducted until the balance reaches zero.
Pension from 60
The guaranteed pension for life. After you die, your spouse gets the same pension for life. After both of you die, your nominee gets the pension wealth built up until you turned 60 (₹1.7 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh, indicative).
If you die before 60
Your spouse can continue the account (a new PRAN in their name, same contribution, until the date you'd have turned 60) and draw the same pension for life. Or your spouse or nominee can close it and receive the pension wealth.
Leaving early
Voluntary exit before 60 is allowed, but you lose the guarantee. You get back only your contributions plus the net returns earned on them, after charges. Government co-contribution (2015–16 joiners) is not refunded. Keep the linked savings account open so the money can be credited.
Upgrade or downgrade
Change your pension amount once in a financial year, with a ₹50 fee (₹25 to the bank, ₹25 to the record-keeping agency). Your bank recalculates the contribution. A downgrade refunds the extra you paid, with returns.
Changing frequency or bank
Switch between monthly, quarterly and half-yearly once a year by written request to your bank. You can also move your APY account to another bank or post office.
Tax
Contributions get the same tax benefits as NPS (Section 80CCD, under CBDT Notification 7/2016). The extra ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B) is available only in the old tax regime. The pension is taxable as income.
Help and complaints
Toll-free APY helpline 1800-110-069. Statements, e-PRAN and the "APY and NPS Lite" app are free. Raise a grievance through your bank or the CRA grievance system (CGMS) online. You get a token number to track it.

Before you rely on these figures

  • This is an independent calculator, not an official one. CalcGlass is not part of, or endorsed by, PFRDA, the Ministry of Finance, the Central Recordkeeping Agency (Protean / NSDL), NPS Trust or any bank. The official amount is the one your bank debits and shows on your APY statement.
  • Contributions come from the Government's published chart (Annex-1, checked 27 Oct 2026). The chart and the rules can change. Confirm with your bank or on pfrda.org.in before you join, upgrade, downgrade or exit.
  • The pension is guaranteed. The other figures are not. The ₹1,000–₹5,000 monthly pension is guaranteed by the Government of India. The nominee corpus is indicative as published. The year-by-year pension wealth, the inflation-adjusted value and the comparison with other investments are estimates from the assumptions shown.
  • Upgrade, downgrade and overdue amounts are estimates. Your bank calculates the exact figures. Published documents describe two different upgrade methods, and the bank's day count for late contributions may differ.
  • Eligibility is your responsibility. Income-tax payers (present or past) can't join from 1 October 2022. Giving wrong details can lead to the account being closed.
  • Not financial, tax or legal advice. We are not registered with SEBI as an investment adviser. Tax benefits depend on your tax regime and the law in force. For a decision about your money, speak to your bank, a SEBI-registered investment adviser or a chartered accountant.

Assumptions & sources

  • Contributions are looked up from the official Annex-1 chart (ages 18–40, five pension levels, three frequencies). Where two published copies differ (age 22, ₹3,000, half-yearly: ₹1,045 vs ₹1,046), the Annex-1 value is used.
  • Your age is your completed age on the day you join, and you pay every contribution on time until 60.
  • The “return built into the chart” and the indicative pension wealth are worked out so the chart's contributions grow to the published nominee corpus by 60. Actual fund returns vary.
  • Upgrade/downgrade: re-fixation uses the chart amount for your current age (PFRDA FAQ, for subscribers aged 40 or below). The differential method carries the gap in past contributions forward at 8 % a year compounded monthly (2020 FAQ and the upgrade form). Fee ₹50.
  • Overdue interest: each missed contribution is charged ₹1 a month per ₹100 (or part) for every month it's late, with the most recent one month (or one quarter or half-year) late. Banks may count days differently.
  • Inflation and the comparison return are your inputs, constant every year, and are used only for the “today's money” and “elsewhere” figures. Taxes and account maintenance charges are not deducted.

Common questions

How much do I need to pay for a ₹5,000 APY pension?

It depends on your age when you join: ₹210 a month at 18, ₹376 at 25, ₹577 at 30, ₹902 at 35 and ₹1,454 at 40, paid until you turn 60. Quarterly and half-yearly amounts are slightly lower per year.

Is the APY pension really guaranteed?

Yes. The Government of India guarantees the minimum pension you choose. If the pension funds earn less than the chart assumes, the Government pays the shortfall. If they earn more, the extra is passed on to you as a higher pension.

Can income-tax payers join APY?

Not since 1 October 2022. Anyone who is or has ever been an income-tax payer can't open a new APY account. People who joined on or before 30 September 2022 can keep contributing and get the full benefits.

What is the maximum age to join APY?

You can join up to your 40th birthday. The chart's highest entry age is 40, with 20 years of contributions. Joining earlier is much cheaper: the ₹1,000 pension costs ₹42 a month at 18 but ₹291 at 40.

What happens if I miss an APY payment?

Your bank collects the missed amount with overdue interest of ₹1 a month for every ₹100 (or part) of the contribution. The interest goes into your own pension account. The account isn't closed, but if you stop paying altogether, maintenance charges are deducted until the balance reaches zero.

What does my family get if I die?

After 60, your spouse gets the same pension for life, and after both of you, your nominee gets the pension wealth (₹1.7 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh, indicative). Before 60, your spouse can continue the account until the date you'd have turned 60 and then draw the pension, or close it and take the pension wealth.

Can I leave APY before 60?

Yes, by submitting the voluntary exit form at your bank. You lose the guaranteed pension and get back only your contributions plus the net returns earned on them, after charges.

Can I increase my APY pension later?

Yes, once in a financial year, for a ₹50 fee. Your bank recalculates the contribution for the new pension. For subscribers aged 40 or below, PFRDA's FAQ describes paying the chart amount for your current age. Use the Upgrade / downgrade option above to see the effect.

Does APY give a tax benefit?

Yes. Contributions get the same deductions as NPS under Section 80CCD, including the extra ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B) in the old tax regime. The pension you receive is taxable as income.
