Wage ceiling: ₹25,000 from 17 Sep 2026 (₹15,000 from 1 Sep 2014 to 16 Sep 2026). If you leave before September 2031, part of your 60-month average falls before 17 Sep 2026, when the ceiling was ₹15,000 — so this estimate may be slightly high.

EPS pension does not rise with inflation; it stays at the amount fixed when it starts.

How this is calculated

Pension = Pensionable salary × Pensionable service ÷ 70; × (1 − 4 % × years before 58) or × (1 + 4 % × years after 58, max 2)

Pensionable salary
Average basic + DA of the last 60 months, each capped at the wage ceiling (₹25,000 now; ₹6,500 for service before 1 Sep 2014)
Pensionable service
Years of EPS membership, +2 years if 20 or more, at most 35

Of your employer's 12 % PF contribution, 8.33 % of wages up to the ceiling goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme rather than your PF balance. After at least 10 years of service it pays a monthly pension for life from 58 — or a reduced one from 50, or an increased one if you defer to 60. The pension depends only on your capped average salary and years of service, not on how much was contributed.

Assumptions & sources

  • Wage ceiling: From 17 Sep 2026 (₹15,000 from 1 Sep 2014 to 16 Sep 2026). Minimum pension: ₹1,000 a month (Since 1 Sep 2014; proposals to raise it were pending, not notified).
  • Early-pension reduction is applied as a flat 4 % per year short of 58, and deferral adds 4 % per completed year after 58 up to 60, as EPFO describes them; service including the 2-year bonus is capped at 35 years.
  • Your pay rises once a year until you leave; service continues without breaks until the exit age.
  • The higher-pension option (for members who contribute on actual salary after the 2022 Supreme Court judgment) uses your uncapped average; its exact treatment for past service depends on EPFO's calculation for your case.

  2. 2Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995 (as amended w.e.f. 1 Sep 2014) — EPFO

Common questions

How is the EPS pension calculated?

Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70. Pensionable salary is your average basic + DA over the last 60 months, capped at the wage ceiling; pensionable service is your years of EPS membership (+2 if you have 20 or more), at most 35.

What is the maximum EPS pension?

With the ₹25,000 ceiling and 35 years of service, ₹12,500 a month at 58 (members on the higher-pension option can get more).

Can I take the pension before 58?

Yes, from 50 if you have left EPS-covered work, with 10+ years of service — reduced by 4 % for each year short of 58 (32 % less at 50). Deferring to 59 or 60 adds 4 % per year.

What if I have less than 10 years of service?

You get a lump-sum withdrawal benefit instead of a pension, or you can take a Scheme Certificate so that future service counts towards the 10 years.
