How this is calculated
Monthly: You = e × Basic; Employer EPF = 12 % × Basic − EPS; EPS = 8.33 % × min(Basic, ₹25,000). Interest = Σ running balance × r ÷ 12, credited yearly
- e
- Your contribution rate (12 %, more with VPF)
- r
- EPF interest rate declared for the year
- EPS
- Employer's share that goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (max ₹2,083 a month)
Both you and your employer contribute 12 % of basic pay plus DA. Most of the employer's share goes to your EPF, but 8.33 % of wages up to the ₹25,000 wage ceiling (at most ₹2,083 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, which pays a pension later instead of growing this balance. Interest is worked out monthly and credited once a year.

Common questions
What is the current EPF interest rate?
8.25 % — FY 2025-26 (same as FY 2024-25), checked 10 Oct 2026.
Why is the employer's contribution less than mine?
Because part of the employer's 12 % — 8.33 % of wages up to the ₹25,000 wage ceiling, at most ₹2,083 a month — goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), not your EPF balance. The ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026.
Is EPF tax-free?
Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if the employer doesn't contribute) is taxable.
