How this is calculated
Balanceₙ = Balanceₙ₋₁ × (1 + r) + Deposit × (1 + r × m ÷ 12)
- r
- Annual PPF rate (interest credited on 31 March)
- m
- Months the year's deposit earns: 12 if made by 5 April
PPF interest is calculated each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month and credited once a year, so the year's deposit only earns for the months it was in the account by the 5th. Depositing the full amount by 5 April therefore earns the most. The account matures after 15 full financial years and can be extended in 5-year blocks, with or without fresh deposits; interest and maturity are tax-free (EEE).

Common questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
7.1 % — Oct–Dec 2026 quarter (unchanged for 10 quarters), checked 10 Oct 2026. The Finance Ministry reviews it every quarter.
Why deposit before 5 April?
Interest for a month is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the month-end. Money deposited by 5 April counts for all 12 months of the financial year; deposited in March it earns nothing that year.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, any number of times — with fresh deposits (apply within a year of maturity) or without deposits, in which case the balance simply keeps earning interest.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. Deposits qualify for Section 80C under the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free.
