With SIPs, every instalment has its own purchase date, so a redemption can include both load-free and load-bearing units (redeemed first-in, first-out) — the SIP Exit Load Calculator works it out instalment by instalment.

How this is calculated

Exit load = Redemption value × Load %, if redeemed within the load period; You receive = Value − Exit load

Load period
Days from the purchase date of the units (each SIP instalment separately)

Many funds charge an exit load if you redeem within a set period — commonly 1 % within 365 days for equity funds — to discourage short-term trading. The load is deducted from your redemption value. Because units are redeemed first-in, first-out, the oldest units go first.

Assumptions & sources

  • 'Within N days' is counted from the purchase date: redeeming on day N or earlier attracts the load.
  • Capital gains tax on the redemption is separate and not included.
  • Exit loads are scheme-specific; check the fund's Scheme Information Document for exact terms.

Common questions

What is a typical exit load?

Equity funds commonly charge 1 % if redeemed within one year. Liquid funds have a small graded load for the first 7 days. Many debt and index funds have none.

Does exit load apply to switches?

Yes — a switch between schemes, or from regular to direct plan, is a redemption and can attract exit load and capital gains tax.

Is exit load charged on SIP units?

Each SIP instalment has its own date, so only units bought within the load period attract the load.
