In India a restaurant can't add a service charge to the bill by default — it's voluntary, and any tip is your choice (CCPA guidelines, 2022; upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2025).
How this is calculated
Tip = (bill or bill + tax) × tip % · Total = bill + tax + tip · Share = total × (person's food ÷ bill), rounded up
- Shared dishes
- Bill minus everyone's own items, split equally before tax and tip are shared out
The tip is a percentage of the bill — usually of the amount before tax. Splitting by what each person ordered shares tax and tip in proportion to each person's food, so someone with a small order doesn't pay for a big one. Rounding each share up makes paying easier; the extra simply becomes a slightly bigger tip.

Common questions
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country. In India 5–10 % is common at sit-down restaurants and entirely voluntary; in the US 15–20 % of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount; choose 'Total with tax' if you prefer.
Is the service charge on my restaurant bill compulsory?
Not in India. Under the 2022 CCPA guidelines a restaurant can't add it by default or make it compulsory; you can ask for it to be removed.
