This is a rule-of-thumb starting point, not personal advice: your income stability, other assets (like a home or EPF, which is debt) and goals all matter.

Keep an emergency fund of 6 months' expenses outside this portfolio. Money needed within a year belongs in a savings account, liquid fund or FD.

How this is calculated

Equity % = min(100 / 110 / 120 − age, horizon cap); Gold = 5–10 % (none under 3 years); Debt = the rest

Asset allocation — how you split money between growth assets (equity), stable assets (debt) and diversifiers (gold) — drives most of a portfolio's risk and return. The classic '100 minus age' rule reduces equity as you get older; this calculator also limits equity for money you'll need soon, because a market fall just before you need the money can't be waited out.

Assumptions & sources

  • Equity between 0 and 90 % of the portfolio.
  • Gold limited to 5–10 % as a diversifier.
  • EPF, PPF and FDs count as debt; your home doesn't count.

Common questions

Is '100 minus age' still valid?

It's a reasonable starting point. With longer lifespans many planners use 110 or 120 minus age for people comfortable with risk — the risk-appetite setting switches between these.

How often should I rebalance?

Once a year, or when an asset class drifts more than about 5 percentage points from its target. Use new investments to rebalance first, which avoids selling and tax.

Why any gold?

Gold tends to hold up when equities fall or the rupee weakens, so a small allocation smooths the portfolio's ride.
