How this is calculated
Converted = amount × rate · You receive = (amount − fee − GST) × rate × (1 − markup) · Inverse rate = 1 ÷ rate
- rate
- Units of the 'To' currency for one unit of 'From'
- markup
- The provider's margin over the reference rate
Converting is a multiplication by the exchange rate; going the other way divides by it. Banks and card networks rarely give you the reference rate — they add a markup, often 1–3.5 %, plus fees. In India, buying or selling foreign currency also attracts GST on a small value set by the GST rules (1 % of amounts up to ₹1 lakh, minimum ₹250; tapering above that), so ₹50,000 costs ₹90 in GST.
Assumptions & sources
- The fee and GST are paid out of the amount being converted.
- GST uses the slab method of CGST Rule 32(2)(b), on the rupee value of the transaction.

Common questions
Why is the rate I get different from the one online?
Online rates are usually mid-market or reference rates. Banks, cards and exchange counters add a margin (markup) and sometimes a fee; enter it to see the real cost.
How much GST is charged on currency exchange?
18 % GST on a taxable value: 1 % of the amount up to ₹1 lakh (minimum ₹250), so ₹45–180; ₹180 + 0.09 % of the part above ₹1 lakh up to ₹10 lakh; ₹990 + 0.018 % above that, capped at ₹10,800.
Does this site fetch live rates?
No — nothing you type leaves your browser. Enter the rate your bank or card quotes, or a reference rate from FBIL.
