Petrol vs Diesel vs Hybrid vs EV: 5-Year Ownership Cost

"EVs cost more upfront — do they really save money?" It depends almost entirely on how far you drive. In our example, an electric car with an ex-showroom price ₹4.5 lakh higher than a petrol car costs ₹16,29,324 to own for five years at 10,000 km a year, against ₹15,11,415 for the petrol car. Drive 20,000 km a year and the order flips: the EV costs ₹16,90,863 and the petrol car ₹18,76,130. Here is the full EV vs petrol car cost in India — price, loan interest, fuel or charging, servicing, insurance and resale — for four comparable cars, and how to find your own break-even distance.

In short

  • At 10,000 km a year, the petrol car is cheapest over five years (₹15,11,415); the EV costs ₹16,29,324.
  • At 20,000 km a year, the EV is cheapest (₹16,90,863) — ₹1,85,267 less than the petrol car.
  • Energy cost per km: petrol ₹7.29, diesel ₹5.29, hybrid ₹4.64, EV charged at home ₹1.23 (₹3.08 on public fast chargers).
  • The EV pays back its higher price at about 13,900 km a year with home charging, but only at about 20,000 km a year on public fast chargers.
  • Resale value is the biggest unknown: it moves the EV's break-even from about 8,800 to 19,000 km a year.

01"EVs cost more upfront — do they really save money?"

With Dhanteras on 6 November 2026 and the festive season in full swing, many families are choosing their next car right now — and the choice is no longer just petrol or diesel. Strong hybrids and electric cars cost more in the showroom but much less per kilometre. Whether that trade pays off depends on the total cost of ownership: everything you spend on the car while you own it, minus what you get back when you sell it.

The short answer: the more you drive, the better an EV looks. At low distances the higher price and loan interest dominate; at high distances the cheap running cost wins. The break-even distance — the yearly kilometres at which two cars cost the same over five years — is the single most useful number to work out before you buy.

02The four cars and the assumptions behind every figure

The four cars are imaginary but comparable: the same size of family car in petrol, diesel, strong-hybrid and electric versions. The prices, mileage and costs are illustrations, not quotes for any brand or model. Check the dealer's on-road quotation and your own driving before you decide.

  • Loan: ₹3 lakh down payment on every car, the rest borrowed at an illustrative 9.5 % a year for 5 years, with a 0.5 % processing fee plus 18 % GST on the fee. The car that costs more needs a bigger loan, so it pays more interest.
  • Fuel prices: Delhi retail prices of ₹102.12 a litre for petrol and ₹95.20 for diesel (PPAC, as of 22 October 2026), held flat for five years. Prices in your city may be higher or lower.
  • Electricity: ₹8 a unit for home charging, an illustrative household rate once slab charges, surcharges and duty are added. Public fast chargers often cost much more — we test ₹20 a unit below.
  • Inflation: every figure is in today's prices. Fuel, servicing and insurance will probably cost more in later years; we keep them flat so the comparison stays simple, and note below what a rise would do.
  • Not included: parking, tolls, tyres, and any extended warranty or battery-replacement cost beyond five years. The EV's lower resale value (40 %) reflects buyers' doubts about older batteries.

03EV vs petrol car cost in India: the 5-year table

Here is what each car costs from the day you buy it to the day you sell it, five years later. The Car Loan Calculator gives the on-road price, the loan, its interest and the fee; the Trip Fuel Cost Calculator gives the fuel or charging bill for 50,000 km (10,000 km a year) and 1,00,000 km (20,000 km a year).

How to read it. "Cost before fuel" is everything except fuel: the on-road price you pay (down payment plus the loan you repay), the interest and fee, servicing and insurance, minus what you get back when you sell. For the petrol car: ₹12,65,000 + ₹2,56,701 + ₹1,75,000 − ₹5,50,000 = ₹11,46,701. Add the fuel bill for your distance and you have the 5-year total.

Try it: your petrol car's fuel bill for 5 years₹3,64,714 for 50,000 km · ₹7.29 per km

Change the distance to your own five-year kilometres (your yearly driving × 5), the mileage to your car's real figure and the price to your city's fuel price.

04Where the money goes: the car itself costs more than the fuel

It is easy to compare cars by mileage alone, but for most buyers fuel is not the biggest cost. For the petrol car at 10,000 km a year, almost half of the ₹15,11,415 is the value the car loses — the on-road price you pay minus the resale value you get back.

₹7,15,000 is the value the car loses over five years (on-road price minus resale), ₹3,64,714 is fuel, ₹2,56,701 is loan interest and fee, and ₹1,75,000 is servicing and insurance renewals.Source: CalcGlass Car Loan and Trip Fuel Cost calculators, with this post's assumptions (an illustration, not a forecast)

That is why an EV's cheap charging takes time to pay off: it saves on the second-largest cost (fuel) but adds to the largest (the price, and the interest on a bigger loan). The EV's on-road price is lower than the hybrid's here only because its road tax is waived.

05Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric: running cost per km

The running cost per km is the fuel price divided by the mileage. It is where an EV shines — as long as you charge at home.

Cost per km = fuel price ÷ mileage

Fuel price
₹ per litre, or ₹ per unit (kWh) of electricity
Mileage
km per litre, or km per unit for an EV

Energy cost per km

Energy cost per km
Petrol (14 km/l)₹7
Diesel (18 km/l)₹5
Strong hybrid (22 km/l)₹5
EV, public fast charging (₹20 a unit)₹3
EV, home charging (₹8 a unit)₹1
Charging at home at ₹8 a unit costs about a sixth of petrol per km. On public fast chargers at ₹20 a unit the EV still costs less than any fuel car, but the gap halves.Source: CalcGlass Car Loan and Trip Fuel Cost calculators, with this post's assumptions (an illustration, not a forecast)
Try it: an EV's charging bill for 5 years₹61,538 for 50,000 km · ₹1.23 per km

For an EV, enter km per unit as the fuel economy and your electricity rate per unit as the fuel price — the maths is the same, and the "litres" in the result then read as units (kWh). Put in ₹20 instead of ₹8 to see the fast-charging cost: ₹1,53,846 for 50,000 km. Your electricity bill shows your real rate per unit, and the Electricity Bill Calculator works it out from your slab tariff.

06When does an EV pay for itself? The break-even distance

The EV's cost before fuel is ₹4,21,085 higher than the petrol car's (₹15,67,786 − ₹11,46,701). Every kilometre it saves ₹7.29 − ₹1.23 = about ₹6.06 in fuel. Divide one by the other and you get the distance at which the two cars cost the same:

Break-even distance = extra cost before fuel ÷ fuel saved per km

Extra cost before fuel
₹4,21,085 for the EV over the petrol car
Fuel saved per km
₹7.29 − ₹1.23 ≈ ₹6.06

₹4,21,085 ÷ ₹6.06 ≈ 69,400 km over five years — about 13,900 km a year. Drive more than that and the EV is the cheaper car; drive less and the petrol car is. The same sum for the other two cars:

07What changes the answer: resale, charging and fuel prices

Three assumptions move the result more than any other. Test them before you decide:

  • Resale value. Used-EV prices are still settling, because buyers worry about battery wear. If the EV sells for 30 % of its price instead of 40 %, its break-even rises to about 95,000 km over five years (19,000 km a year). If it holds 50 %, the break-even falls to about 43,900 km (8,800 km a year).
  • Where you charge. Home charging at ₹8 a unit gives a break-even of about 13,900 km a year. Relying on public fast chargers at ₹20 a unit pushes it to about 20,000 km a year. If you can't charge at home or at work, the case for an EV is much weaker.
  • Fuel prices. We kept fuel flat, but petrol in Delhi rose from ₹94.77 to ₹102.12 a litre in May 2026 — 7.8 % in a few days. Every rise in fuel prices helps the EV and hybrid; a sharp rise in electricity tariffs would work the other way.
  • Diesel and hybrid need 25,900–30,300 km a year to beat petrol in this example. They suit long-distance drivers, not mostly-city commuters — and some cities restrict older diesel cars, which can hurt resale.

08What's changed in 2026 for car buyers

  • Fuel prices went up for the first time since 2022. Oil companies revised prices several times in May 2026; as of 22 October 2026, petrol costs ₹102.12 and diesel ₹95.20 a litre in Delhi (PPAC). Prices are higher in many other cities — check your own.
  • Loans may cost more. The RBI raised the repo rate by 0.25 % to 5.50 % on 7 October 2026, its first increase since February 2023. Floating-rate loans linked to the repo rate reset over the following months; new car-loan rates are set by each lender, so compare the full cost (the Key Facts Statement shows it) rather than the headline rate.
  • GST on cars, since 22 September 2025: 18 % for small cars (petrol, CNG or hybrid up to 1,200 cc and diesel up to 1,500 cc, no longer than 4 metres), 40 % for larger cars, and 5 % for electric cars, with the old compensation cess removed (CBIC, as of October 2026). The ex-showroom price already includes GST.
  • EV registration and road tax. Electric vehicles pay no fee to issue or renew a registration certificate under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (amended August 2021). Road tax is set by each state: several waive it for EVs — for example Maharashtra under its EV Policy 2025, which runs to March 2030 — while others charge a reduced rate or are bringing it back. Ask your RTO or check your state transport department's site.

09Your next step

  1. Use the Mileage Calculator with your current car's last few fill-ups to see your real mileage and how far you drive.
  2. Run your five-year distance through the Trip Fuel Cost Calculator for each car you're considering — with km per unit and your tariff for an EV.
  3. Put each car's on-road quote into the Car Loan Calculator to compare the EMI, interest and what the car really costs you.
  4. Check your home charging rate with the Electricity Bill Calculator using your state's slab tariff.

10Questions people ask

Is an EV cheaper than a petrol car in India?

To run, yes: charging at home costs about ₹1.23 per km against ₹7.29 for petrol in this example. To own, only if you drive enough. Here the EV is cheaper over five years above about 13,900 km a year with home charging; below that, the petrol car costs less because of the EV's higher price and loan interest.

How many km a year should I drive for an EV to make sense?

Work out your break-even distance: the extra cost of the EV before fuel divided by the fuel it saves per km. In this example it's about 13,900 km a year with home charging and about 20,000 km on public fast chargers. Your answer depends on the prices, your tariff and the resale value you assume.

Is a hybrid worth it over petrol?

A strong hybrid saves fuel — ₹4.64 per km against ₹7.29 here — but costs more to buy. In this example it needs about 30,300 km a year to beat the petrol car over five years. It suits drivers who cover long distances and can't charge an EV.

Is diesel still cheaper than petrol?

Diesel costs less per km (₹5.29 against ₹7.29 here), but diesel cars cost more to buy and may resell for less. In this example the diesel car needs about 25,900 km a year to come out cheaper than petrol over five years.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

Divide your electricity rate by the car's km per unit. At ₹8 a unit and 6.5 km per unit, that's about ₹1.23 per km, or ₹61,538 for 50,000 km. Your rate depends on your state's slab tariff, surcharges and duty — your bill shows the average per unit.

Do electric cars pay road tax in India?

Road tax is set by each state. Many states waive or cut it for EVs under their EV policies — Maharashtra's runs to March 2030 — while some have reintroduced it. Registration certificate fees are waived for EVs nationally. Check your state transport department or RTO before you buy.
