How this is calculated

Add tax: Total = Price × (1 + r) · Remove tax: Price = Total ÷ (1 + r), Tax = Total − Price

r
Tax rate as a decimal (18 % → 0.18)
CGST / SGST
Within a state, GST is split equally between the Centre and the state; between states it's charged as IGST

When a price excludes tax, multiply by (1 + rate). When it already includes tax, divide by (1 + rate) to get the base — taking 18 % off the total would be wrong, because the tax was charged on the base, not the total. In India, GST within a state is split equally into CGST and SGST; on interstate sales the whole amount is IGST.

Assumptions & sources

  • Tax charged on the discounted value; no cess, reverse charge or composition scheme.
  • Rates as entered — the correct GST rate depends on the item's HSN/SAC classification.

Common questions

How do I work out VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the price by (1 + rate) to get the net amount; the difference is the VAT. At 20 %, £120 includes £20 of VAT — not £24.

What VAT rate should I use?

It depends on the country and the item: the UK standard rate is 20 %, the UAE 5 %, and EU standard rates range from about 17 % to 27 %. Many countries have reduced rates for food, books or energy.
