How this is calculated
Add tax: Total = Price × (1 + r) · Remove tax: Price = Total ÷ (1 + r), Tax = Total − Price
- r
- Tax rate as a decimal (18 % → 0.18)
- CGST / SGST
- Within a state, GST is split equally between the Centre and the state; between states it's charged as IGST
When a price excludes tax, multiply by (1 + rate). When it already includes tax, divide by (1 + rate) to get the base — taking 18 % off the total would be wrong, because the tax was charged on the base, not the total. In India, GST within a state is split equally into CGST and SGST; on interstate sales the whole amount is IGST.

Common questions
How is sales tax calculated?
Multiply the price by the combined rate — state plus county and city taxes. $80 at 8.25 % is $6.60 of tax, $86.60 in total.
How do I find the price before tax?
Divide the total by (1 + rate). $108.88 at 8.875 % → $108.88 ÷ 1.08875 = $100.00.
