Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator — Healthy Range by Week

Find the healthy amount of weight to gain during pregnancy from your pre-pregnancy weight and height, using the US Institute of Medicine (2009) guidelines: the total for the whole pregnancy, the recommended range at your current week, the weekly rate for the second and third trimesters, and — if you enter your weight today — whether you're below, within or above the range. Includes the provisional ranges for twins.

How this is calculated

BMI = weight before pregnancy ÷ height² · weeks 1–13: 0.5–2 kg in total · then + weekly rate × (week − 13)

Weekly rate
Underweight 0.44–0.58, normal 0.35–0.50, overweight 0.23–0.33, obese 0.17–0.27 kg a week

How much to gain depends on your weight before pregnancy. Women who started underweight should gain more (12.5–18 kg), those of normal weight 11.5–16 kg, overweight 7–11.5 kg, and obese 5–9 kg. Most of the gain comes after the first trimester, at a fairly steady weekly rate. Twin pregnancies need more.
