Tile & Flooring Calculator — Tiles, Boxes, Skirting, Grout & Cost
Work out the tiles you need for a room or wall: enter the size of the area and the tile, the grout joint and the laying pattern, and get the tile count with a cutting allowance, the boxes to buy, skirting tiles cut from the same tiles, the grout needed and the total cost. Works for floor tiles, wall tiles, vitrified tiles, laminate and planks.
Your inputs
Quick start — try a typical case
Fixed cabinets, a kitchen platform, a bathtub — in sq ft or m².
Gap between tiles — 2–3 mm for vitrified tiles; 1/8 inch ≈ 3 mm. 0 for click-lock planks.
Set by the pattern; raise it for rooms with many corners. Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for repairs.
From the box label — e.g. 4 for 600 × 600 mm (1.44 m² a box). 0 to skip boxes.

Tiles to Buy
48 tiles · 12 boxes
For 168 sq ft, including 10% extra for cuts
- Area to Tile
- 168 sq ft (15.61 m²)
- Tiles Without the Extra
- 43.1 — order 48 for the floor
- Boxes
- 12 boxes of 4 — 0 tiles spare
- Grout
- About 1.6 kg (incl. 10% extra)
Buy all boxes from the same batch (shade and size can vary between batches), and keep a few spare tiles for future repairs.
How this is calculated
Tiles = area ÷ ((L + joint) × (W + joint)) × (1 + extra %) · Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up · Grout (kg/m²) = (L + W) ÷ (L × W) × thickness × joint × 1.6
- L, W
- Tile length and width (mm)
- 1.6
- Grout density, kg per litre (1.4–1.6 by product)
Each tile covers its own size plus half the grout joint on every side, so the joint is added to the tile's length and width. Divide the area by that, then add an allowance for cut tiles and breakage: about 10 % for a straight layout, 15 % for diagonal and 20 % for herringbone. Skirting strips are cut from the long side of a tile, so one tile gives several strips. Grout is estimated with the standard consumption formula used by grout manufacturers.
Assumptions & sources
- Rectangular area; for L-shaped rooms add the parts with the area option.
- Grout estimate includes 10 % extra and uses a density of 1.6 kg/L.
- 1Grout consumption formula — (A + B) ÷ (A × B) × C × D × density — Tiling trade practice (manufacturers' grout calculators, e.g. Weber, UZIN)

Common questions
How many 2 × 2 ft tiles do I need for a 12 × 14 ft room?
168 sq ft ÷ 4 sq ft a tile = 42 tiles, plus 10 % for cuts = 47 tiles (46.2 rounded up) — 12 boxes of 4. Grout joints change this very slightly.
How much extra tile should I buy?
About 10 % for a straight layout, 15 % for diagonal and 20 % for herringbone or rooms with lots of corners and cut-outs.
Do grout joints change the number of tiles?
Slightly — wider joints mean each tile covers a little more area, so you need a few fewer tiles; the calculator includes them.
