Electricity Bill & Appliance Cost Calculator

List your appliances with their wattage and daily hours to see the units (kWh) each uses and your monthly electricity bill — at a flat rate per unit or your state's telescopic slab tariff, plus fixed charges and electricity duty. See which appliances cost the most to run.

Watts are on the appliance's label. For fridges and ACs the compressor cycles on and off — the typical average draw is lower than the rated watts.

1 unit = 1 kWh = 1,000 watts for one hour. Rated watts are the maximum: fridges, ACs and geysers cycle on and off, so real use is usually lower.

Tariffs, fixed charges and duty vary by state, connection type and season — check your latest bill or your electricity board's tariff order.

How this is calculated

Units (kWh) = watts × quantity × hours a day × days ÷ 1,000 · Bill = energy charge + duty + fixed charge

Slab tariff
Telescopic: the first slab's rate applies to the first units, the next rate to the next units, and so on
Duty
Electricity duty or tax as a % of the energy charge

Electricity is billed in units — kilowatt-hours. An appliance's energy use is its power (watts) multiplied by the hours it runs; divide by 1,000 to get kWh. Most Indian states charge a slab (telescopic) tariff where the rate rises as you use more, plus a fixed charge and electricity duty.

Assumptions & sources

  • Appliances draw their rated watts while on (an upper estimate for cycling appliances).
  • One billing period of the given length; no time-of-day pricing or subsidies.

Common questions

How many units does a 1.5-ton AC use?

A 1.5-ton inverter AC draws roughly 0.8–1.5 kW when running hard, so 8 hours a night uses around 7–10 units — about 200–300 units a month.

How do I calculate electricity units?

Watts × hours ÷ 1,000. A 75 W fan running 12 hours uses 0.9 units a day, 27 units a month.

Why is my bill higher than units × rate?

Slab tariffs charge more for higher usage, and the bill adds fixed or meter charges and electricity duty.
